Learning by Doing, Growing with Purpose

At Bali Earth School, we believe children learn best through real-life experiences. That’s why our school brings together different approaches that have been proven to work – Project-Based Learning, Jolly Phonics, and The Moth – into one place. This combination helps children learn by doing, develop strong reading and writing skills, and grow confidence in sharing their own stories. In our classrooms, teachers act as facilitators who support and encourage children, not the only source of knowledge. We want students to explore, ask questions, and discover answers through their own experiences.

Our Journey

Many alternative schools create their own systems without knowing whether they truly work. Too often, children end up becoming test subjects for methods that lack proven results. At the same time, many schools write down their values but never live by them – leaving children without the chance to learn from real-life experiences.

At Bali Earth School, we do not want this to happen to our students. That’s why we adopt approaches that have been tested and proven, and we bring them together in one school. Here, children don’t just read about learning values – they experience them every day through projects, stories, and meaningful connections to life.

What Our Founder Has Done and Keeps Doing to Solve the Problem

Our Founder did a lot of research over many years about school models that were already proven to work – where children learn in a student-centered way and through real-life experiences, not only from teachers as in traditional schools. She found High Tech High (HTH) in San Diego, a school recognized worldwide for Project-Based Learning.

She curated her learning journey at HTH – passing their teacher training, integrating into their system, and building lasting collaborations with their educators. She also gained a personal mentor from HTH’s senior leadership, providing deep and ongoing guidance. This close partnership allows Bali Earth School to truly bring tested and trusted practices into the classroom, ensuring children learn in meaningful and practical ways.

Why High Tech High?

High Tech High started in 2000 as one small public school in San Diego. Today, it has grown into 16 thriving schools known worldwide for innovation and impact.

We chose High Tech High because we share the same four design principles:

Jolly Phonics: Our Guide to Reading and Writing

Research by leading literacy experts, including Dr. Louisa Moats and Prof. Linnea Ehri, demonstrates that teaching children letter names without systematic instruction in sounds can create confusion and delay reading development. To address this, many countries, including the UK, have adopted systematic phonics instruction – and Bali Earth School proudly implements Jolly Phonics.

As our Founder continued her research, she discovered Jolly Phonics as the best way for children to learn reading and writing. Traditional ABC methods are considered harmful for young learners, so she chose a proven approach. She even learned directly from the founder of Jolly Phonics, Mr. Chris Jolly, known as the Phonics Father.

Evidence-Based Benefits:

  • Sound-Based Learning: Children learn letter sounds first, forming the foundation for fluent reading.
  • Systematic and structured: Children learn to read and write by blending and segmenting sounds. This way, children understand naturally – without memorization and without harming brain development.
  • Engaging Instruction: In Jolly Phonics, every new sound is always introduced through a story, followed by an action, then the sound itself, and finally the letter shape. This step-by-step method engages all four ways children learn – visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and speech – making reading and writing both systematic and effective.

Educational Impact:

Jolly Phonics aligns with current literacy research, supporting early decoding skills, phonemic awareness, and long-term reading proficiency.

Our approach ensures children develop strong literacy skills without relying on rote memorization, laying a solid foundation for academic success.

Storytelling Project, Supported by The Moth, Chicago, USA

Every subject and every lesson at Bali Earth School begins with storytelling. Our Founder learned how to deliver stories directly from The Moth in the USA, the best storytelling school in the world.

Project Highlights:

  • Write & Illustrate Their Own Storybook: Children transform their imagination into a tangible creation, combining literacy and artistic expression.
  • Global Sharing: Stories are shared through The Moth community in Chicago, USA, providing an authentic audience beyond the classroom.
  • Develop Communication & Confidence Skills: Oral storytelling encourages public speaking, self-expression, and self-confidence.

Programs involving storytelling and oral presentation have been shown to improve communication skills, social-emotional development, and self-esteem (The Moth Education Programs, USA).

Educational Impact:

This project aligns with research showing that creative storytelling enhances literacy, empathy, and critical thinking. By participating, children not only develop essential cognitive and social skills but also learn to communicate ideas effectively to a broader audience.

Outcome: Today’s storybook could become tomorrow’s stage performance, inspiring others while demonstrating your child’s unique voice and potential.
